Health information deserves care. These are the principles we want Live Well Bell to stand for, from the questions we choose to the language we use.
Make things understandable
Use everyday language and explain technical terms when they matter. A reader should be able to follow the reasoning, see the main finding and understand its practical limits.
Keep claims in proportion
The strength of a claim should reflect the strength of the evidence. The size of a study, the people involved, its duration and the outcomes measured all affect what a finding can tell us.
A link between two things needs a different explanation from evidence that one causes the other. Early laboratory findings also need to be distinguished from results in people.
Show where information comes from
Sources give readers a way to explore the evidence for themselves. Our aim is to make the connection between a source and the claim it supports clear, with preference for original research and relevant public-health guidance.
Leave room for uncertainty
Useful explanations can include unanswered questions, mixed findings and changing conclusions. We value honest limits and aim to make them visible alongside any potential benefits.
Remember the person reading
Health choices sit within real lives. Cost, access, disability, culture, enjoyment and individual medical needs all deserve consideration. We aim for a respectful tone that helps people understand their options.
Be accurate about expertise
Names, qualifications and descriptions of experience should be accurate. Any statement that an article has been medically reviewed should identify the person who carried out that review and reflect work that actually happened.
Welcome corrections
Questions and challenges can improve an explanation. A useful correction request identifies the article, the passage in question and any supporting evidence. Our aim is to review substantive concerns and make significant factual corrections clear to readers.
Keep commercial relationships visible
Readers should be able to recognise paid placements, affiliate relationships and other relevant commercial interests wherever they affect content. Clear disclosure is part of the standard we want to uphold.
Take privacy seriously
We use optional Google Analytics only with your permission, to understand how the journal is used. You can reject it or change your choice through Cookie settings in the footer. Information a reader chooses to provide in a message or comment is different: it should be handled with care and used for the purpose for which it was supplied.
